Start-up Stories: Plymouth Carpentry

Start-up Stories: Plymouth Carpentry

by | Business

Thomas and Jack have been working at one of the world’s leading producers of luxury yachts for over ten years between them. They have recently taken the bold step of starting up their own business, Plymouth Carpentry. Sticking to their roots in woodwork and carpentry, Tom and Jack offer bespoke carpentry and joinery as their main service. Their services don’t stop there, they also offer a kitchen and bathroom fitting service along with general property maintenance with all types of maintenance considered. We caught up with Tom to discover their business start-up story.

Who is Plymouth Carpentry?

“There are three of us, me (Tom), Jack and Aaron. Jack and I are the woodwork experts with over ten years of experience between us. Aaron is the admin and first point of contact. He’s helped us set everything up and runs the business day to day. Aaron has ten years of customer service and admin experience so our all customers get a warm welcome!”

Why did you go into business?

Jack and Tom have known each other all of their lives. Working together has proved to be fun for them. But working as part of a large team has one drawback: they never get to see the satisfaction of their customer’s faces when they receive their luxury woodwork items. As well as this, they get constant requests for bespoke furniture, and nagging to fit family and friends’ kitchens. It was a natural step to take the plunge and launch their own business, “Plymouth Carpentry”.

“Making things official seemed to be the next logical step” says Thomas. “Being able to provide bespoke household items that our customers can enjoy for years is a fantastic feeling.”

What is your background?

“I’ve been working with wood for over seven years, originally creating cabinets, doors and windows for the Duchy of Cornwall. I then moved onto working for one of the world’s leading producers of luxury yachts. I’ve always been a focused, goal orientated and hardworking individual and seeing the clients finished product in front of me and saying ‘I made that’ – it really makes you proud. Seeing the customer’s positive reaction is even better!”

What makes you unique?

“Other than our boyish good looks and hilarious wit, our customer service is second to none. We ensure the end product has a fantastic finish. Working on the yachts taught us to insist on putting quality first. If there was even the slightest mistake, the whole job would be scrapped and started over. We believe this philosophy is important. We won’t supply any customer with a faulty service or product.”

What is the best thing about running your own business?

“The customer’s reaction. We keep them smiling, we have never had a complaint on price and we have received nothing but positive comments on the workmanship and customer service received. It feels great when you know you have done a good job.”

What have you learned so far?

“That although the business world can be a harsh one, the people and businesses of Plymouth are incredibly supportive. Without this support network around us, I’m not sure we would have even considered taking the leap of faith to running our own business.”

What is next for Plymouth Carpentry?

“Right now we are going to continue to focus on providing a top quality service as that’s most important. We care about our customers and don’t want to rush things forward but are ready to evolve when needed. Oh, and we are getting a van, so keep your eyes peeled for us!”
